Jim Harbaugh rips Californians
Wednesday 01-25-2012 10:04am ET

Jim Harbaugh does NOT want to talk about his feelings!

Having had a couple of opportunities to speak with San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh on media calls this year, I'm well aware that while the man clearly knows as much about football as anyone on the planet, he's not always very open with reporters. That's not unusual among coaches, though it's a bit jarring when you live in Seattle and are used to Pete Carroll's two-page opening statements.

In any case, and for a coach who can be truculent under the best circumstances, it was understandable that Harbaugh might be a little tight-lipped at Monday's end-of-season press conference. Still burning from the 49ers' NFC championship loss to the New York Giants, Harbaugh was short to the point of exasperation at times, refusing to answer certain questions with anything beyond a simple "No," or "I'm not going to turn this into a personnel meeting." He used that one a LOT. But Harbaugh saved the best for last, when one reporter asked what he did after the loss to the Giants.

"Is it just California that everybody just wants to know how you feel? Care about what you thought, what you did, how you felt, how your pinky feels. Is that just a California thing? Back where I come from, nobody really cares. In my opinion, it is a California thing."

Alrighty then!

Harbaugh spent a lot of time in Michigan — his father was an assistant coach for Bo Schembechler for seven years, and Harbaugh played quarterback for the Wolverines. But he also attended Palo Alto High School, and his time as the quarterbacks coach for the Oakland Raiders (2002-2003), the head coach for the University of San Diego (2004-2006) and as Stanford's head coach (2007-2010) should have had him way up on the more "touchy-feely" aspects of the Cali mindset. Maybe Harbaugh picked up that grumpiness from Mike Ditka — he played quarterback for Da Coach from 1987 through 1992 at the start of a 15-year NFL career.

Harbaugh was, however, a bit more open when talking about his feelings for a group of players that surprised the NFL with a 13-3 record after a decade without a winning season for the 49ers franchise. "I've said so often how proud I was of this team. I thought they played their hearts out. I thought we were a well-coached team. Be very proud of our guys. They stand toe-to-toe and fight every time they go out onto the field. It didn't have the ending that we wanted. The football gods had a different ending in mind for this ballgame. [But I'll] be forever proud of our players and coaches the way they compete."

That must not be a "California thing." And if you expect him to interface with his players … well, think again. "I talk to all these guys every day. Pretty much every single day, almost every guy. They know how I feel. I know how they feel. No, we're not scheduling sit-down meetings with anybody on the team, from my standpoint, because I know them, they know me."

The coach was also still rolling one play over and over in his mind from the Giants loss — the ruling on the field that New York fullback Ahmad Bradshaw hadn't fumbled because his forward progress was stopped. It seemed an interesting call for a second-effort back such as Bradshaw, though Harbaugh may not have given his own defense enough credit for the stop.

"My opinion, that was a fumble," he said. "And I'm sure the league will defend it. And the officials will defend it. But to me the play was continuing. There was still struggling going on by Bradshaw. So, I feel like that was a fumble. We had a game against the Giants, the first time we played them, and Donte Whitner stripped the ball where the hit's made at the six and then he rips the ball out at the nine going backwards. Yeah, didn't like that it wasn't a fumble, but felt like that was forward progress.  This one, I did not agree with. I felt like it was a fumble. I felt like this is analogous with the 'Tuck Rule.'"

Perhaps a valid point, but now, it's time to move on. What did Harbaugh learn about his team in his first year as an NFL coach — one that has him high on the list of Coach of the Year candidates?

"This is a class bunch of guys. It's a class group. A class team. They have never been a finger-pointing group. To a man that I've talked to, everybody looks at themselves in the mirror first. Things sting as it relates to what we could have done better."

He'll never be a New Age coach, but Harbaugh's old-school approach still clearly has a place in today's NFL.

MJ Baby!....not sure about the Kobe Comparison
Wednesday 01-18-2012 11:17am ET

Michael Jordan thinks only Kobe Bryant deserves comparisons

Kobe Bryant explains the plot of "Single White Female" to Michael Jordan (Jamie Squire/Getty).

Ever since Michael Jordan retired — all three times, really — the NBA has searched for the heir to his throne. Many players have popped up as pretenders to the throne, from Harold Miner to Jerry Stackhouse to Vince Carter. In recent years, people have stopped trying to find a clone and just searched for a similarly dominant great player. If you ever wondered why LeBron James is seen as such a failure, a lot of it has to do with his inability to meet the example set by Jordan.

There are many great players in the NBA these days, most of whom have never been directly compared to Jordan. Nevertheless, His Airness says only one player comes close enough to his greatness to merit the comparison. Not surprisingly, that player is Kobe Bryant. Here's what Roland Lazenby, a great writer currently working on a Jordan book, tweeted on Sunday (via PBT):

Kobe's ultimate competition is MJ. That's why MJ watches him. MJ made people think what he was doing wasn't human. Ditto the Kobester.

I never said Kobe was better than MJ. MJ just told me Kobe's the only one to have done the work, to deserve comparison.

Congratulations, Kobe: Your life's work has meant something. All that time spent aping Jordan's movements and skills has paid off. He acknowledged you. You made it.

Of course, if the notoriously petty Jordan was going to mention anyone, it makes that he'd single out Kobe, and not just because he'd consider the mimicry flattering. Bryant really does work harder than everyone else, and he's been good for long enough (with no signs of slowing down) that he may eventually top Jordan's longevity. They're similarly insane competitors.

The "Next Jordan" idea was always a silly one, but Bryant is certainly the player most like Jordan in all aspects of his game — even if he eventually becomes something less than the greatest player of the post-MJ era, which I'm sure many of you will argue in the comments. That's an accomplishment in itself. Even coming close to the top means something.

Cyber Monday Deals.......get them while you can.......
Monday 11-28-2011 4:52pm ET

Like many of the brick-and-mortar retailers offering Black Friday sales this year, many Cyber Monday retailers are allowing customers to shop the deals early before the actual online shopping holiday. Others, however, are staying tight-lipped about their deals until the day before, so MainStreet rounded up some of the best Cyber Monday sales that retailers are pushing in 2011.

Wal-Mart

The world's largest retailer tried to lure consumers to its doors first by kicking off Black Friday sales on Thursday. Its Cyber Monday sales are also beginning a day early. Wal-Mart will begin its "Cyber Week" sales with deals on gadgets, toys and home goods. Shoppers will be able to scoop up 32-inch Toshiba LCD HDTVs for $249 and Xbox holiday gamer bundles for $319. Tramontina Dutch ovens will be offered for $35 and Hot Wheels Mega Garage Playsets will be $25. The site will offer free shipping on orders of more than $45, on qualifying products.

Toys "R" Us

The toy superstore plans to roll out discounts on thousands of items on its website, starting at 6 p.m. Sunday. Shoppers will be able to get 60% off the cost of certain video game titles with the purchase of another game. Calico Critters' products will be 50% off, while certain Nerf products will be up to 40%. Perennial favorites such as Little Tikes Bouncers and Razor Scooters will be discounted by 30%. Prices on Easy-Bake Ovens and Power Rangers action figures will be cut by 20%. Barbie dolls will sell for $15 less, while Hot Wheels cars will be offered for $10 off. Consumers will get free shipping on orders of at least $49.

Macy's

The department store plans to offer discounts on hundreds of items on its website. For the home, shoppers will find Dyson DC-17 Total Clean vacuums for $349.99 and 24-piece bedding sets for $99.99. The store will offer buy-one-get-one-free deals on certain women's sweaters and 50% off of select women's coats. In accessories, handbag prices will be cut by 25% to 40%, while Charter Club leather gloves and cashmere scarves will be 50% off. Macy's will also lower its minimum order for free shipping to $75, using the promotional code "CYBER."

Sam's Club

Sam's Club, not to be outdone by sister store Wal-Mart, has some Cyber Monday deals to rival Wal-Mart. The shopping club has an Asus i5 Notebook for $479 with free shipping. The TV deals have been great this year at every retailer, and Sam's Club has a Magnavox 32-inch LCD HDTV for $248.88 with free shipping.

You have to be a member of the shopping club to get the deals, but you can score an annual membership for as little as $40 The deals start at 10 p.m. Sunday and last until Dec. 2.

Costco

Bulk retailer Costco plans to offer deals on everything from jewelry to coffee during its Cyber Monday sale. Shoppers will be able to buy computers for up to $500 off, Brother and Hewlett-Packard printers for up to $120 off and iPad accessories for as much as $30 off. Costco will cut the price of the Dyson DC25 Animal Ball vacuum by $100 and the Maytag washer/dryer set by $500. Certain sheets, robes and gift baskets will be discounted by $10 to $25. Non-members must pay a surcharge to make purchases on the site.

Barnes & Noble

Barnes & Noble has really amped up the deals it's offering to members this year, and its Cyber Monday deals reflect that. The book retailer is giving 25% off of one item purchased online to members. This means that members could use that one-time 25% discount to pre-order the new Nook Color e-reader, normally $249, for less than $200. Barnes & Noble will also offer select DVD and Blu-ray movies for up to 80% off.

Microsoft

The software maker is offering discounts on computers, accessories and video games through Monday on its website. The company is offering a Samsung RC512 Core i5 laptop for $499, down from $799. They're cutting the price of their Xbox gaming bundles by $200 and selling their Kinect Sensors for $99.99. Certain Xbox games are on sale for $20 off and prices on many computer accessories have been cut by 25%.

Amazon.com

Starting at midnight on Sunday, the online powerhouse will begin sales on gadgets, toys, home goods and jewelry. Along with its $79 Kindle and $199 Kindle Fire, Amazon is offering a Sony Cybershot 10.2-megapixel camera for $199 (a savings of $150), a Microsoft Xbox 360 holiday bundle that includes Fable III and Halo Reach for $199 ($100 off), and TechnoMarine watches for 40% off. Sweaters and fleece clothing will be discounted by up to 60%. The site is also cutting the price of Hasbro games and VTech electronic toys by 50%. "Twilight" DVDs will be on sale for $6.99.

Target

Wal-Mart's biggest rival will be rolling out its own week of sales during its "Cyber Week." The discount chain is cutting prices of clothing and home goods by more than 50%, and toys by 30% to 50%. In particular, Target is offering $100 in free accessories when you buy a Sony Tablet S for $499.99, and discounts of more than 30% on other gadgets. Shoppers can also pick up stocking stuffers such as buy-one-get-one-free Pillow Pets and $3.99 DVDs.

First Lady booed at NASCAR

Michelle Obama, Dr. Jill Biden Draw Boos at NASCAR Event

First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden were   grand marshals at today’s NASCAR season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway, appearing as part of their charitable campaign to support military veterans and their families.

But their benign, bipartisan cause wasn’t enough to prevent public fallout from the nation’s polarized political climate as they were introduced before the crowd.

ESPN video from the event documented loud boos from some in the stands as the announcer named Obama and Biden, seconds before they delivered the “most famous words in motorsports,” telling drivers to start their engines.

The pair — who co-chair the   Joining Forces initiative — stood beside retired Army Sgt. Andrew Barry and his family. Barry was wounded in action in Iraq and Afghanistan, retired from the military in 2009 and now volunteers at an Orlando veterans center, the announcer said. He received resounding applause.

A source traveling with the first lady downplayed the incident, telling ABC News there was no discernible booing during the “loud chaotic program with jets flying over and tons of noise.”

The Associated Press reported that the two women received a standing ovation at the pre-race meeting with drivers, during which Obama said NASCAR was “amazing in terms of its support, not just today but every day, for military families.”

Before the race, the first lady addressed a barbeque for military families that NASCAR had invited to the event.

“Everyone around the country is focused on you.  And this isn’t just an effort today,” she said. “ Jill and I through Joining Forces, we want to make this a part of the dialogue in this country forever.  Whether Jill or I are here or not, whether this administration is here or not, this is about the way we want this country to talk about our troops, veterans and military families forever.  We want you to feel that appreciation and that gratitude so that you know your sacrifice is not in vain.”

The negative reaction from fans was first reported by   Mediaite.
