Norm Van Ness

I was born and raised in Gibsonburg, Ohio…graduating from G.H.S. all the way back in 1986.  I joined the US Air Force when I graduated and became an avionics technician on F-15 fighters.  I was stationed in Florida and deployed with my unit to Saudi Arabia for Operation Desert Shield/Storm.

When I got out of the service, my wife, Amy, and I moved back to NW Ohio and we both worked out way through college at BGSU.  Amy got a degree in Special Education…I got mine in Broadcast Journalism.  It was during that time that I really caught the broadcasting bug…and did some radio news work at WSPD, along with some TV stuff at WTOL and WNWO.

We moved to Denver and I worked at several of the TV stations there through the late 90s, mostly behind the scenes.   During that time I went back to school to study meteorology.  That led to some fill-in work in Colorado Springs and in Denver.  That experience then took me to East Texas for my first full-time on-air job as Chief Met.  Next up was Channel 24 in Toledo starting out on the morning show, then moving up to the Chief job in 2008.

I grew up going to Fremont Speedway and Millstream Speedway in Findlay.  My family had race cars when I was very young, and that has always been a part of my life.  I’m a huge sprint car fan and most weekends you’ll find me at either Fremont or Attica taking in the races.  On special occasions, I’ll run down to Eldora Speedway.

My wife and I enjoy camping…so you might run into us at one of our outstanding state parks.  Racing and camping give me the opportunity to pursue one of my hobbies…photography.  I’m also a mediocre guitar player…playing everything from country, to blues, to rock.

And I’m proud to say that most of my family listens to CKY instead of “the other guys”.   (And for the record, they did that BEFORE I started doing weather for them).
